Privacy Policy & Data Disclosures
Last updated: July 18, 2026 ¡ Effective Date: January 1, 2026
At TheInsureCalculator (theinsurecalculator.com), user privacy and data security are absolute priorities. Since our tools process geographic, household financial, and lifestyle factors to estimate health insurance premiums, calculate life insurance needs, and display public federal datasets, we maintain strict privacy policies. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit our website and use our calculator tools.
1. Health & Demographic Inputs
When using our marketplace subsidy calculator, life insurance estimator, or other health-related tools, you may input personal parameters including ages of household members, gender, tobacco use status, annual household income, expected medical utilization tier, number of dependents, and employment-related financial details such as outstanding debts and current savings.
How We Process This Data
All health and demographic inputs are processed entirely client-side in your local browser. These values are compiled using JavaScript within your browser's memory and are never transmitted to, recorded on, or persistently stored on our servers. When external API requests are made to retrieve plan data from the CMS Marketplace API, they are sent anonymously â your personal inputs are used only to construct the query parameters and are not included in any server-side logs or databases.
We do not create user profiles, track individual health data across sessions, or sell any personal health information to third parties. Your demographic inputs exist only in your browser's temporary memory and are cleared when you close the page or navigate away.
2. Geographic & Location Data
Our tools require geographic information to provide accurate results. We look up ZIP codes, State abbreviations, County names, and County FIPS codes to load matching federal health plans, determine Medicaid expansion eligibility, retrieve FEMA disaster statistics, and display location-specific recreation areas.
How We Process This Data
Geographic keys are passed purely as temporary query parameters to fetch public datasets from federal APIs including CMS, NHTSA, USDA, and RIDB. No location history, mapping data, or geographic tracking information is stored on our servers. We do not use geolocation APIs or GPS data from your device. All geographic inputs are provided voluntarily by you through form fields.
3. Cookie Policy & Third-Party Advertising
We use browser cookies for two primary purposes:
- Functional Cookies: To retain user preferences such as your active plan comparison selections, dark/light theme state, and cookie consent status. These are first-party cookies stored locally in your browser's localStorage.
Managing Your Cookie Preferences
When you first visit our site, a cookie consent banner allows you to accept or reject non-essential cookies. You can also clear cookies through your browser settings or use browser extensions.
4. Third-Party API Data Sources
Our platform connects to several federal government APIs to retrieve public data. These external services have their own privacy policies and data handling practices:
- CMS Marketplace API (marketplace.api.healthcare.gov) â Health insurance plan data
- NHTSA Vehicle API (api.nhtsa.dot.gov) â Vehicle specifications and safety recalls
- USDA ARMS Database (ers.usda.gov) â Agricultural economic survey data
- Recreation Information Database (ridb.recreation.gov) â National parks and recreation facilities
- USDA Plants Database (plantsservices.sc.egov.usda.gov) â Botanical taxonomy records
- FEMA Disaster Data (fema.gov) â Regional flood risk and disaster history
We act as an intermediary that queries these public APIs on your behalf. We do not modify, store, or redistribute the raw data returned by these services beyond displaying it in your browser session.
5. Data Retention & Security
Since we do not collect or store personal user data on our servers, there is no personal data retention period. Server access logs (containing only IP addresses and request timestamps) are retained for a maximum of 30 days for security monitoring and are then automatically purged. We employ HTTPS/TLS encryption for all connections, implement security headers (HSTS, CSP, X-Frame-Options), and follow industry best practices for web application security.
6. Children's Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
Our services are not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The health insurance marketplace tools are designed for adults who are making healthcare coverage decisions for themselves and their families. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us immediately at [email protected].
7. Your Rights & Choices
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, including:
- The right to access any personal data we hold about you (note: we do not store personal data)
- The right to request deletion of any personal data
- The right to opt out of personalized advertising via Google's Ad Settings
- The right to reject non-essential cookies through our consent banner
- The right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority
For California residents under the CCPA: We do not sell personal information. For EU/EEA residents under GDPR: Our legal basis for processing is legitimate interest (providing our free calculator services) and consent (for advertising cookies).
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technologies, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed about how we protect your information. Continued use of our website after any modifications constitutes your acknowledgment of the updated policy.
